Power Of The Falls

April 4th, 2011

Finally I am posting a photo of the ACTUAL waterfalls from my trip to Niagara Falls last month. You all are probably thinking, “Why wouldn’t he post a shot of the falls first?” Well, here is my reasoning behind that. Part of being a photographer is finding locations and angles that a normal tourist with a point-and-shoot would not dare to think to take a picture of. I get responses all of the time with people asking me, “why would you take a picture of that?” or, “I would have never thought that would make a good picture!”

Getting a shot of Horseshoe falls that every other dag-on photographer hasn’t taken is damn near impossible! That is why I haven’t posted one until now. It just never caught my interest. Ya know? But, on the other side, you can’t go to Niagara Falls and not post a picture of the waterfalls. So here ya go, one plain old photo that everyone and their mother has taken of Horseshoe Falls…but with more dynamic range ;-)

If you haven’t taken a look at my last three photos from my trip to Canada, I would advise to head on over and check them out. They are my attempts at non-touristy photographs, in a very touristy place.

The American Falls and a Lamp Post

April 2nd, 2011

So, I don’t think that I could have come up with a more lame title for this photo than the one I chose. Truth is, I think the scene explains all that needs to be explained.

This particular shot was a bit tricky to process. It had excessive noise, and since it was taken hand-held, not all of the exposures lined up in post processing. I remember when I first taking HDR’s, I would take three or five different shots of the same scene, only with different settings, just in case one didn’t turn out. This happened quite often since I wasn’t familiar with the camera or the settings, or anything about photography what-so-ever. Now, I have acquired more skills where I am able to fix minor mistakes in Photoshop where that sort of thing doesn’t happen.

Futuristic Tunnel

March 27th, 2011

This is the futuristic-looking tunnel that connected the Four Points Sheraton where we stayed to the Casino in Niagara Falls. We used this walkway quite a bit to walk down to the falls and Casino. It was quite chilly that weekend so it came in handy. I really liked the look of the walkway against the sky that day. When nobody was around, I quickly snapped three exposures of the scene. The speed of the autobracketing on the D7000 really helped that weekend. It allowed me to capture nearly every shot without the use of a tripod in bright daylight. I love that camera. Maybe soon I will get around to writing a mini review on it.

Fallsview Casino

March 22nd, 2011

Last weekend, my girlfriend and I took a trip up to Niagara Falls for our three year anniversary. She had never been up there, and I have always enjoyed it. This was my first time up there with a camera though. I was trying to go for a non-touristy shot with this one.

This is the Fallsview Casino. There are two casinos in Niagara Falls, this one being the newer of the two. I’m not much of a gambler, but it is a pretty nice casino.
