Watching The Polar Bear

October 26th, 2011

This is the underground tunnel to the newest exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo; Water’s Edge. It features various water dwelling animals such as polar bears, sea otters, fish, and sharks… all which you can walk underneath the tunnel. I’ve been lucky each time I have gone to the zoo. The polar bear just so happens to be in the water every time. I walked through this area twice on my past visit, and the first time, nobody was under the tunnel. When the polar bear jumped in the water, fifty people came storming through the doors to get a glimpse.

This was the second pass through Water’s Edge. It was later in the day and not as many people were under the tunnel.

Bored

October 18th, 2011

Since I took the day off on Monday of last week for my Birthday, my girlfriend and I decided to go to both Phipps Conservatory and the Zoo. We weren’t sure how many nice days would be left for the zoo so we thought it would be a good day to go. It was a great day for the zoo. Weather was perfect, all the animals were in prime location for viewing, and it wasn’t too crowded.

I snapped this little guy while in the primate house. I hope that they will renovate this area of the zoo. The glass is very dirty, cages are small, and it just plain smells in there. Since the condition of the glass is poor, it’s really hard to capture a monkey/ape with both proper lighting and sharpness. Somehow, I managed to get both for this bored fellow. I ran it through Photomatix just to bring out the details a bit. Thanks for stopping!

Just Hangin’ Around

November 18th, 2010

I found this guy hangin’ out at the Pittsburgh Zoo over the weekend. We have been having some really nice weather for a few days so decided to venture over there with my girlfriend and parents. It was in the upper sixties this weekend and was perfect zoo weather. My parents haven’t been to the Pittsburgh Zoo in almost ten years, so it was neat to see their faces on how much it has changed since then. I don’t think HDR was necessary here but I ran it through Photomatix to bring out the shadows and details a bit.
